Music Ministry
The music ministry at First Baptist Church Of Lake Worth is a community of musicians with a desire to spread God’s glory broader and deeper in corporate worship. Here at FBC, we realize that the forms of orship may change and vary even from week to week, yet the essence of worship will always remain constant. All true worship begins and ends with God Himself.
“For from Him and through Him and to Him are all things. To Him be glory forever. Amen” (Romans 11:36 ESV)
Music is not the only element in corporate worship, but has always been a deep and powerful way for God’s people to express their thankfulness and adoration for the God who so mercifully rescued us “... out of darkness into His marvelous light.” (1 Peter 2:9 ESV).
We desire to serve the body here at FBC with music that is in spirit (sincere, heartfelt, emotional, passionate) and in truth (Christ centered, biblical theological, confessional). According to the Scriptures, this is the kind of worship in which God brings glory to His Son (John 4:20-26). The apostle Paul puts it this way: “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God” (Colossians 3:16 ESV). The various music ministries at FBC continually aim toward excellence in our music and service, striving to grow spiritually, musically, and in our fellowship with one another, all in an effort to serve Christ’s church and bring Him the glory due His name.
Each music ministry is equally valuable to the body here at FBC. While some are more visible than others, all function in a vital way to the service of God’s people here at this fellowship. Our music ministry includes adults, students and children and various other places of service. 10 Principles for Corporate Worship at FBC
1. Unapologetically God-centered
Worship is about God. It’s a meeting with Him that evokes great thoughts of, prayers to, and praise to the true and living God.
2. Prayer for the Perceivable Presence of God
Worship is not just our going to Him, but Him coming to us. In worship, He meets with His people in a special and perceivable way. So we surrender to Him and ask Him to come and meet powerfully with us because it’s Him we desire.
3. Bible Based and Bible Saturated
Many of the “hows” of worship are given in the Bible, where these are clear we want to heed God’s Word well. And as we worship as He has prescribed, our worship will be saturated with the Word of God, which is able to encourage, enliven, convict and save.
4. Purposefully Contemplative and Theological
Worshiping the true God means knowing whom He is-and wanting to know Him in every attitude. Believing that “God is great and greatly to be praised” (Psalm 145:3), we embrace rich and deep truths as the pathway to passionate praise.
5. Genuinely and Earnestly Passionate
Without manipulating emotions, we will always attempt to obey the God who commands us to rejoice and exalt. Our worshipful passion springs from the truth of God and the God of truth. When genuinely worshipful and truth based, our passions often result in a visible way such as singing loudly, clapping, smiling weeping and even silence.
6. Authentic In Words, Actions, and Emotions
We will purpose to worship without hypocrisy or deceit. We will always try to promote a spirit of genuineness, authenticity, even transparency, in our music, singing, preaching and prayers. We are all (including our leaders) fallen sinners desperately in need of God.
7. Undistracting Excellence
While genuinely authentic, we will pursue excellence in our music singing, preaching, Bible reading, technical ministries, and anything else related to corporate worship- for God’s glory, not our own. Striving for a balance between the “shoddy” and “showy”, we never want to distract from a God-ward focus.
8. Intentional Togetherness
Colossians 3:16 directs us to sing to “one another” for the purpose of encouragement. The Psalms, likewise, repeatedly insist on praise spreading, and worshippers joining together for God’s praises. So we will purpose to sing with an intentional togetherness and unity.
9. Mingling Reverence and Celebration
There is a time to “be still and know” that He is God (Psalm 46:10), and there is a time to “shout for joy” (Psalm 32:11). There is a time to repent that we have sinned, and a time to celebrate that our sins are forgiven. So we will mingle seriousness and celebration in our worship to demonstrate that our God is both holy and love.
10. Gospel and Grace Orientation
Knowing that our only right to God’s presence is through the blood and righteousness of Jesus Christ, our worship must not only acknowledge the gospel by which we’ve been saved, but also be a continual thanksgiving and celebration of the mercy that is “new every morning” (Lamentations 3:23). Or, succinctly put, the Gospel is both the means and the content of our worship.
It is no infrequent thing in the Psalms to read of the plea for God’s people to “sing a new song unto the Lord” (Psalm 98:1). But why sing a new song? And what does that mean about old songs? People write new songs because of a desire to want to say it better, clearer, and more passionately than they, or others have before. We seek to write or sing a new song in hopes of expressing an aspect of the infinite character and glory of God in a way that further reaches for the proper clarity and passion that He is due. This does not mean that we must only sing new songs. In fact, it may mean that we turn to old songs. At FBC, we sing rich, old hymns not because we like heritage and tradition; but because a handful of God’s people down through the ages worded truth into musical poetry so well that we cannot miss out on it. It often fits the cry of our heart when nothing else quite does. So whether new or old, let us sing the songs before us thoughtfully, loudly and passionately. He is great and greatly to be praised.
